4 Reasons Spring Is The Best Time for Family Photos In The Bay Area

Fall is my favorite season, but Spring is a close second, and it is the best time for family photos in the Bay Area. When people think of family photos, fall tends to get all the love—but spring is just as magical (if not more so!). And, as an East Bay family photographer, I love spring for its beautiful light, blooming landscapes, and mild weather.

So if you’ve only ever considered fall for your family session, let me change your mind. Here’s why spring might just be the perfect time for your next family photo session—plus my best tips as an East Bay family photographer on how to make it work.

1. Perfect Weather for Comfortable, Happy Kids

Living in the Bay Area, we are all used to microclimates—during the summer and fall, it might be upwards of 90 degrees in the East Bay and a cool, crisp 65 in San Francisco. But spring is different. The East Bay has some of the best spring weather. No freezing in the cold or sweating in the summer heat—spring is the sweet spot for outdoor sessions.

Because of the mild weather, kids (and parents!) tend to be more relaxed because they’re more comfortable. You can easily layer a light sweater over a sweet spring dress and be cozy and content for the whole session.

And, in addition to the beautiful weather, morning or golden hour sessions make use of the best light without the harsh summer sun. And BONUS—the sun sets a little earlier, making a golden hour session easy to schedule even with kids’ earlier bedtimes.

2. You Can’t Beat Mt. Diablo in the Spring for Family Photos

Have you ever been to Mt. Diablo in the spring? It is truly magical. Spring blooms, fresh greenery, and soft golden light create a dreamy setting.

In addition to the rolling hills of Mt. Diablo, there are so many incredible locations in Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Lafayette, and Martinez that offer gorgeous, natural backdrops in the spring. Some of the more “popular” locations aren’t as crowded as they are in the fall, making your session even more relaxed.

🌿 Bonus: Bay Area wildflowers and lush green fields add a natural, vibrant touch to your photos—without needing to battle fall crowds at the usual spots!

3. More Flexibility in Scheduling Spring Family Photos

If you’re a family with little ones starting school and afterschool or weekend activities, fall can be a really busy time. Weekend fall session times fill up fast with holiday card photos—so spring can offer more availability and relaxed booking. This can be a great option for families who want to avoid the holiday rush.

Plus, let’s be real: your holiday card doesn’t need to be a “fall family photo.” Your family can be documented anytime of the year, and it will still feel special. The season doesn’t define the milestone—it’s about capturing your family just as you are, right now.
